Public Sector Retirees Coalition Opposed to HST Legislation

(Mississauga, ON) – The Public Sector Retiree Coalition representing over 20,000 retired public sector employees in Ontario strongly oppose the provincial government’s Harmonized Sales Tax legislation.

The Coalition expressed concerns that the HST will adversely affect those most vulnerable to the increased tax, retired citizens. Heating fuel, hydro and funeral costs are just a few of the items which will cost more under the proposed legislation.

The Coalition will be seeking support from other retiree organizations across the province in order to maximize the message of saying NO to the HST.

Coalition spokesperson Jim Garchinski, a retired Hamilton police officer stated: “Let's be clear about this HST issue. We strongly oppose this new tax because we believe it will have a negative financial effect on our members. Most troublesome is the fact that government drafted this legislation behind closed doors without any public consultation. Our members, along with all other Ontarians, are having something imposed on them without a meaningful opportunity to express their concerns. This is unfair and undemocratic.”

Mr. Garchinski went on to point out that four years ago this same government unilaterally imposed the Health Tax which amounted to a significant tax increase for most Ontarians. Now we are faced with yet another tax increase if the HST is adopted.

“We want the government to convene the Standing Committee on General Government as soon as possible in order to give all Ontarians the right to express their concerns over this pending legislation. I think it’s important for governments to understand that they just can't arbitrarily impose taxes or other legislation on citizens without consultation” stated Mr.Garchinski.
